Pepper In My SFG

Nearing The End of the Season

Raised Bed Square Foot Gardens

Winding down.....

Here we are in October, and the tomatoes are on the decline, but overall I'm thrilled with how the square foot gardening went. I was most worried about the tomatoes in such a small space, but attaching them to the wire rabbit fencing with floral wire really worked well.

What I Learned This Summer

1. Plant more swiss chard. Miracle of miracles, the kids even liked it.
2. Lettuce was great until mid-July.
3. Try a different spinach variety.
4. Tomatoes: They worked better than expected packed in along my rabbit fence around the square foot gardens. I'll move them, but stick with that same plan and still plant misc. ones around the perimeter of my yard.
5. What happened to the zucchini?????? That was the mystery of the summer.
6. Green beans should do better now with the improved rabbit fence. That was the biggest rabbit casualty in early spring. They loved those healthy young thriving green bean plants.
7. Are peppers a waste of time and space? Who knows? I'm thinking they are.
8. Next year: More squash!!!!
9. The square foot garden method using Mel's Mix really did cut down on weeds. The weeds did NOT win the war this year.
10. Come up with a few different veggies to plant.

The Beginning....

The seeds, the raised beds, and the fun of planning............This is my first year to use Mel's Mix/Square Foot Garden method. My wonderful husband made the beds, and I found a wonderful source for the coarse grained vermiculite, and the rest was pretty easy and fun.
